– 12 hours intensive creativity.
FotoMarathon 2019 was fun. It is not the first time I have participated in FotoMarathon, and I hope it won’t be the last. Last Friday when I was done getting all my gear ready for the photography competition on Saturday, I found some old pictures from last time I participated, I was surprised how long ago it was. Hopefully it won’t be as long in between this time and the next.
Creative on command
It is a cool challenge to practice being creative on command, and a great way to evolve as a photographer and an artist. In 2015 and 2016 when I last participated, I was very happy with the images I took, I still like them, but I have learned so much since, and I absolutely see room for improvement. It is such a satisfying feeling, to be able to see in your images that you have evolved as a photographer over a period of time.
FotoMarathon is an intensive photography competition where you can participate in 6, 12 or 24 hours, I chose 12 hours. For every hour you participate, you get a theme, a kind of headline for your image. Your images must be taken within the given timeframe, and in the right order, theme 1 before theme 2 and so on. Also you are not allowed to do any kind of post processing or editing of your images.
Happy with the result
Just how well my images will do in the competition, I have no idea, but I am happy with the result. Of course there is room for improvement, hopefully there always will be for every photographer, no matter how good you are. What really makes me happy with my result this year, as opposed to earlier, is the fact that I really see a read thread throughout the images, and I see my personality shine through.
Yes yes I am quite literally present in most of my images this year, but that is not what I mean when I say that I see my personality shine through. My 12 images this year are not just technically good images that any photographer could shoot. In all likelihood, many photographers would probably even say that my images are not technically good images at all, and they may be right. I have played with long exposure, and overexposed quite a few of the images on purpose, it is my active artistic choice, many you like it, maybe you don’t.
As mentioned, I see plenty of room for improvement still, but that doesn’t make me any less happy with the result I handed in. I am already looking forward to next year.
I would love to know what other people think of the images.
